Transcutaneous (through the skin) Electrical Nerve Stimulation, known as TENS, is a non-invasive therapy used to relieve pain. Unlike strong pain medication, TENS therapy does not cause nausea, drowsiness or lead to dependence on medicine.
TENS works by applying a gentle electrical current through the skin, to nerves at or near the painful area (See Photo 2 – Electrode Positioning). The electrical impulses initially block the transmission of pain signals to the brain and subsequently replace the painful sensations with a tingling feeling. TENS therapy relieves acute and chronic pain, soothes fatigue in congested limbs and improves blood circulation in treated areas.
The Duo-TENS device delivers electromagnetic stimulation to the painful sites through 2 channels and a choice of eight treatment modes to provide strong, targeted relief from a variety of complaints including:
- Sporting injuries
- Arthritic and rheumatic pain
- Menstrual pain
- Pelvic pain caused by endometriosis.
- Neck, knee and back pain
- Fibromyalgia
- Diabetic neuropathy
- Spinal cord injury
Side effects of TENS therapy are rare but may include muscle soreness (from overusing the TENS device) or minor skin irritation, at the site where the electrodes were applied, which usually subsides within 30 minutes of completing treatment.
In the following groups TENS therapy should be avoided, unless first approved by your doctor:
People with heart problems or who are fitted with a pacemaker or with another type of electrical or metal implant.
Women should avoid using TENS devices early in their pregnancy.
Those with epilepsy, as applying electrodes to the head or neck areas may induce seizures.
